Future Scope

Future Scope Feedback:

“Since the conference I have been meeting with members of the orthopedic department at my school and have attended events hosted by the orthopedics SIG. I also presented research at the American Surgical Congress.”

“I have connected with mentors, gotten involved in orthopaedic research and have set up a 3rd year elective rotation in orthopaedics.”

“I feel that this was the most comprehensive information both about the residency application process and the lived experiences of orthopedic surgeons that I have ever received. I now feel that I am more prepared to pursue the specialty.”

“Prior to this course I was hesitant to commit to applying to orthopaedic surgery out of fear that I would not fit in within the field. After this course, I feel empowered and excited to pursue this specialty.”

Happiness Project

The AANA Happiness Project, fueled by AANA Past President Dr. John Tokish, along with Drs. James Shaha and Rachel Frank, aims to accumulate quantifiable data from members of the orthopedic community to better gauge their current level of happiness. Initiated in the Spring of 2023, respondents were asked to anonymously reflect on their current overall social, economic, and personal wellbeing, as they relate to their profession. The survey, consisting of 102 questions, was completed by more than 700 members of the Orthopedic community. Examples of questions include:

  • How many vacations do you take per year?
  • How would you rate your financial stress?
  • Days home for dinner per week.
  • What is one thing you would change about your job to make you happier?

AANA hopes that the information collected will lead to publication, awareness, and recognition that will support physicians across all fields to better understand their wellbeing. Using a predictive model, data collected from this project can be utilized to improve the day-to-day life, balance, and mindset of Orthopaedic Surgeons around the world. Currently, statistical analysis is underway to develop significance amongst the trends observed. AANA looks forward to sharing the findings in 2025.
