Military Advanced Surgical Treatment Summit Research Initiative Call for Proposals

Completed applications for the research grant are due by October 13, 2023.

In collaboration with the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and the Society for Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS), AANA recently announced an exciting new grant funding opportunity for research in orthopaedics pertaining to the military population or general population. Applications are currently being accepted for the Military Advanced Surgical Treatment (MAST) Research Initiative, a $200,000 grant funded by the AANA MAST Program.

AANA President John M. Tokish, M.D. understands the importance of discovering important findings in this area as a practicing surgeon and colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. His passion for research spawned the development of this opportunity, and collaboration with other important orthopaedic organizations dedicated to sports medicine and treating the military athlete, AOSSM and SOMOS, helped turn the initiative from concept to reality.

Interested applicants should be a member of either AANA, AOSSM or SOMOS and submit a proposal that pertains to pre-clinical or clinical research that aims to improve orthopaedic treatment, techniques, and/or populations within the outlined initiatives. Proposals should support advancement in biologics, surgical skills development, return to sport or duty, or patient-reported outcomes. The organizations’ leadership are looking for applications to focus on any population, subset or demographic. Certain consideration, however, may be given to submissions with a military populace.

Detailed eligibility, timeline and grant objectives are available for reference on aana.org/MASTResearch. Completed applications should be submitted by October 13, 2023. A winner will be selected at the MAST Summit in early November.
